PERIODONTICS

Periodontics:

is the study of supporting structures of teeth, diseases and conditions that affect them. Periodontics can reveal gum diseases and periodontitis as well as receding gums, exposed roots and tooth grinding.

Scaling and Root Planing

- The most common and conservative form of treatment for periodontal (gum) disease. Scaling is the removal of calculus and plaque that is attached to the tooth surface, it especially targets the area below the gum line, along the root.

Osseous Surgery

- Type of surgery that changes the architectural bone to eliminate bacteria and affected areas. It is used for the treatment of gum disease called periodontitis.

Bone Graft

- Can be performed along with osseous surgery, for local bone replacement due to periodontal inflammation and bone loss.

Arestin

- Antibiotic powder which is placed inside infected periodontal pockets, soon after scaling and root planning is done. Over a period of time Arestin is released into the infected pocket, killing the bacteria that causes periodontal disease.

Because periodontal disease is a chronic disease, your gums need to be checked regularly.
Periodontal disease is very common and affects an estimated 50 million people in the United States.
